On November 12, Physician Associates family medicine physician Michael Young, MD, presented “Healthy Living: Understanding Diabetes” at the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA. He provided a comprehensive overview of this disease which affects millions of Americans. He covered:

  • glucose and insulin and how they interact in the body
  • insulin resistance and how lifestyle and nutrition choices can lead to prediabetes and then full diabetes
  • risk factors and symptoms of diabetes
  • steps patients can take to turn their health around, including diet changes, exercise and the importance of healthy weight loss
  • current diabetes medications available.

On October 29, Truc Tran, DO, of Ocoee Internal Medicine spoke at Health Central about “How to Find the Right Primary Care Physician for You and Your Family.”  Choosing a new physician can be challenging whether you are moving to a new community or helping a loved one find a primary care provider (PCP). The presentation covered the current role of the primary care physician in a patient’s care as well as the importance of having a good relationship with your PCP.  Dr. Tran also covered:

Physician Associates pediatrician Alix Casler, MD, appeared LIVE on FOX 35’s Good Day Orlando morning show to discuss the flu vaccine. Some states are now requiring daycares and preschools to have all children receive the flu vaccine. Dr. Casler explained why this is a very smart move and why children especially should be immunized (either with a shot or via nasal mist) for the flu. She also explained that the CDC now is recommending the flu mist vaccine for kids ages 2-8 because its more effective.

Physician Associates pediatrician Jennifer Thielhelm, MD, appeared LIVE on FOX 35’s Good Day Orlando morning show to discuss Enterovirus, the symptoms parents should look for and who is most at risk. Dr. Thielhelm explained just how contagious this virus can be and some basic steps to prevent the spread of the virus. She also explained why kids with asthma may be more at risk but overall why parents shouldn’t panic.

Last Wednesday morning, Dr. Deborah Lauridsen, Family Medicine physician with Physician Associates appeared LIVE on FOX 35 Good Day Orlando to discuss a new study that looked at a link between sleep and employees taking sick days. The new study out of Finland found that adults who sleep between seven and eight hours per night miss fewer work days due to sickness. Dr. Lauridsen discussed the quantity and quality of our sleep and how it really impacts our daily functioning.

On Tuesday, Dr. Bob Duggan, a Foot and Ankle Surgeon at Physician Associates appeared in the Orlando Sentinel providing expert insight for an article about the health risks of brown recluse spider bites. Dr. Duggan shared his experience treating patients with these dangerous bites, why these bites can be so dangerous and what precautions the community should take to avoid this type of spider.

Last Sunday, Physician Associates pediatrician Dr. Casler spoke on LIVE on FOX 35's Good Day Orlando morning show about the impact that male smokers can have on their future children and their risk of developing asthma. This segment looked at a study out of Norway on epigenetics that found that a baby had a greater risk of asthma if their father smoked before they were conceived.

Physician Associates Pediatrician Dr. Casler appeared LIVE on FOX 35's Good Day Orlando on Saturday to discuss the short-term and long-term impact of alcohol on teens. This segment examined a new study that shows 1/3 of kids aged 15 to 16 say that their parents give them alcohol.

Last weekend Dr. Pamela Cates-Smith, Physician Associates appeared LIVE on FOX 35's Good Day Orlando to discuss what expectant moms need to know about managing their morning sickness symptoms. The media interest in this topic stemmed from the announcement out of the UK that the Duchess of Cambridge is pregnant with her second child and is again suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum.

A recent episode of Orange TV’s Health Connections show was entirely dedicated to Foot Health, featuring Physician Associates' very own Foot and Ankle Surgeon Dr. Bob Duggan and one of his patients Deb Nickerson. Dr. Duggan helped explain what people need to remember about their feet and maintaining the health of their feet, as well as symptoms that you may have a foot injury. Deb Nickerson, who recently recovered from a heel injury, shared her personal experience and why everyone needs to remember that the health of their feet should be a priority.
